Project River – Day 8 – Characters

25,020 words so far. I realized today that I’m going to have to scrap a scene and a half from earlier in the novel to adjust for new characterization and plot. The characters are finally coming together in my head, so I’ve decided to outline them below.

There are many more characters, but these are the important players in the first book.

Kelran Aleris

Previously his name was Aleris Kelradich in my original planning. He goes by Kel. He is a quick-witted, miserly merchant who owns his own river vessel, the Abni. He eschews adventure for safe, profitable routes with a certain return on his investment. He has many acquaintances, but few friends.

Ivy Zirina

Ivy is a untalented cleric of Liless. Despite showing promise at an early age, her ability to wield magic never came to fruition. Now, with knowledge of the temple but no power of her own to protect herself, the head cleric sends her far away from the Legemy as a mysterious foe threatens.

Jerol ad Verron

Son of a gentry merchant, he gets in trouble for partying, running across rooftops, and playing pranks. His father sends him with Kel to learn more about being responsible.

Miss Ziena Mellien

Ivy’s previous teacher and now mentor. She is strict and no-nonsense, with an especial hatred for technology.

Hob Tinok

He is a technological genius who designed and build the steam engine that powers the Abni. He is also an astom, a tall hairy humanoid that feeds on smells instead of food.

Master Cleric Luzia Seranghast

She is the main antagonist at the beginning of the series. She is consolodating power in conjuction with Arthan Dynus, another cleric, by containing Liless in the central holding chamber at the Legemy and having direct access to her powers.
