Delta Green Scenario: Interview with a Survivor

J-Cell is sent to interview a college student who has experienced an anomalous event.

This scenario is intended as a short prologue or interlude in another scenario. The theme is the unknowable: the agents only do a single interview and no other information is available. The agents can never know everything.

Briefing

Case Officer Agent Louise, contacts J-Cell, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to interview Benjamin Craft. Benjamin is a suspect in a missing person’s investigation that raised flags on their servers.

A-Cell has provided cover identities, suits, badges, and documentation for the Agents to pose as FBI investigators.

Interview Questions

A-Cell has sent five questions to answer. J-Cell should report their answers to Agent Louise.

  • What did the suspect experience?
  • Was the suspect injured (specifically, was their skin broken)?
  • Did anyone else experience anomalous events and where are they?
  • Do you believe the suspect’s story?
  • Do you believe a threat exists?

Benjamin’s Story

Benjamin was a young, fit man in the bio-chemistry program at the University of Minnesota. When the agents go in for an interview he is gaunt looking, with bags under his bloodshot eyes, and his skin hangs loose and pale. He has been in police custody for forty-eight hours, and doesn’t look like he’s gotten any sleep. He has a few bruises, but no broken skin.

Ben will tell a sanitized version of his story to the agents. If they see through his lies and gain his trust, he will tell them the full version of the story.

Sanitized Story

Ben and his friends, Andy and Ethan, are urban explorers with their own YouTube channel, ABE Urbex, with almost 2,000 subscribers. They went to the Gunderson Grain Elevator near the University of Minnesota campus on Saturday night to shoot a video (True).

They climbed the stairs straight to the roof (Lie) and found a hole leading to the funnel (True). Andy climbed down with a camera and after a few minutes they heard him shout (True). They looked in, but the funnel was empty (Lie). They fled down the stairs (Lie), hearing someone chasing them (True). Ben had the headlamp (True), so Ethan must’ve fallen behind (Lie).

Upon escaping, Ben called the police (True). The police could find no trace of his friends (True). He doesn’t know what happened (Lie).

Full Story

For each lie in the sanitized story that he tells the truth about, there is a chance that Ben will start to have a panic attack. If the agents can calm him, he will continue. If not, he will have an attack for 10-15 minutes until he calms down, and he will refuse to cover that part of the story in detail.

(Panic Attack: 0%) When the group arrived, Andy and Ben had an argument about forgetting the headlamps, but the argument was really about Jenny. She was Ben’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, but had recently hooked up with Andy. In the end, Ethan broke up the fight.

(Panic attack: 10%) They went up the stairs to the loading level, just below the roof. The whole time, it felt as if someone was watching them. Andy tripped over an open hole, badly scraping his knee and almost falling a hundred feet into the grain bin. Ethan wanted to go back down after that, but Andy insisted they continue.

(Panic Attack: 45%) They went to the roof and found a hole broken in the roof that revealed a funnel. Ethan was too afraid, Ben felt like they were being watched, but Andy wanted to see in. They helped him down and he filmed the funnel for a few minutes. Then he screamed. Looking in, Ben saw a dark tendril coming out of the funnel and wrapping around Andy’s leg. It was horrific and unnatural.

(Panic Attack: 55%) Ethan ran, but Ben tried to reach down to Andy. Their hands almost met, when the funnel started to run and Andy was pulled into it with a horrific crunching noise. As another the tendril reached out for Ben, he ran away.

(Panic Attack: 30%) He heard the thing chasing after him, but kept running. Halfway down the stairs, he came across Ethan, lying against the railing and sobbing. He was holding his hand, which was bleeding. The two shouted at each other, terrified.

(Panic Attack: 40%) Looking up, Ben’s headlamp illuminated… something. It was a mass of tentacles and unnatural shapes. It reached out and grabbed Ethan by the hand. Ben ran, leaving his friend behind, and not stopping until he made it to the car.

He called the police and told them what happened, but they did not believe his story.

After the Interview

Agent Louise will thank the agents and they are released from the case. If the agents ask, Agent Louise will say that another cell will follow up. If they investigate the grain elevator on their own, they receive an order directly from A-Cell to desist. If the agents keep track of Benjamin, he apparently hangs himself in prison two weeks later.
